Boston,
Pregnancy is a wonderful time for the whole family. The expectant mother, the doting father, the excited grandparents and friends all make the event a momentous one that you will remember forever. There are plenty of people who will give advice on the best way to stay healthy and glowing during your term and lots of the information will just be hearsay, urban myth or stories past down from generation to generation. These are known as old wives tales, told by the elders in the family and past down through the ages.
Perhaps there may have been some truth to this kind of folklore, but let’s examine a few and see if there are any that you have heard from your parents.
1. If you have heartburn during the pregnancy, your baby will be born with lots of hair.
Or it could be all those odd cravings you have been having. Pickled onions and gravel will give anyone heartburn.
2. If the fetal heart is beating fast, it will be a girl.
This is hard to test unless you have the equipment at home, but rest assured, as long a the heart is beating hard, all will be fine no matter what gender it is.
3. Hot water and towels are needed for the delivery of the baby.
This was just something said to fathers to keep them out of the way and busy whilst the women got on with the real work of having the baby.
4. If you hang a string by a thread and dangle it over the belly of the mother, if it swings in a circle, you are having a boy and a girl if it goes back and forwards.
This also depends on how drunk you are when holding the string. A very inconclusive way to determine gender!
5. The time of conception is thought to have been an important way to tell if you are having a boy or a girl.
There is a chinese fertility chart that bases this on the age of the mother and the date of conception and is said to be 90% accurate.
6. If you eat the end slices of a loaf of bread whilst pregnant, you will be having a boy.
Crusts! Ugh! You have to be really hungry or pregnant to eat them!
7. If you are craving cheese during the pregnancy, it is going to be a boy.
Your body is shouting out for more protein. Why this means it will be a boy is beyond me.
8. If you are carrying your “bump” high and round it will be a girl.
But if it is a football shaped bump, it might be the next sporting superstar.
9. Dry skin on your hands means it’s a boy.
This will be a prelude to having to wash all of their dirty clothes.
10. Eating spicy food brings on the delivery of the baby.
Curry? Salsa? Who wouldn’t want to escape that!
