Boston,
So you think you might be pregnant. But, you don’t know for sure and it’ll be several weeks before the most revealing of the pregnancy symptoms arises: a missed period.
Does that mean you have to guess about it until then? It would be beneficial to you and your unborn baby if you knew right away. In that way you could start ensuring the health of your baby from just about day one of your pregnancy.
Aside from a missed period, there are quite a few pregnancy symptoms. Your body really is trying to tell you that you’re pregnant. You just need to learn how to read it. So what are some of the other signs of a pregnancy?
These symptoms, though, are usually overlooked because they can be indicators of any number of health issues – from minor temporary problems like not eating properly to larger more serious disorders. They’re far too easy to ignore or attribute to something else – like working too hard, not eating properly, even a mild case of the flu. It’s amazing how many women thought their morning sickness was the flu. It’s only on looking back that they were able to read the symptom as a sign of pregnancy.
Five Symptoms That May Indicate You’re Pregnant
The following five signs are some of the most overlooked pregnancy symptoms by women. If you suspect you may be you may want to see how many of these symptoms you’re feeling – and what the realistic cause may be.
1. Spotting and Cramping
Called, implantation bleeding, spotting, where you bleed only a little accompanied by what feels like menstrual cramps occurs only a few days after conception. Many women, in fact, do mistake this for the start of a period.
There is one difference to the implantation bleeding though. The spotting is also accompanied by a thick, white milky discharge. This occurs because the walls of the vagina begin to thick in preparation for the pregnancy.
2. Breast changes
This too is a subtle change in a woman’s physical condition. Once a woman has conceived her body begins to prepare for the coming of the baby. The breasts may become swollen and sore.
For some women, they even feel tender when touched. A week or two after conception, your breasts may even feel tingly. Your breasts may also feel heavier than usual. All of these changes are occurring in response to changes in your hormone levels.
3. Fatigue
Talk about subtle symptoms! Fatigue has to rank up there as number one. I know that when I was pregnant, I dismissed my fatigue as simply working too hard lately. Today, fatigue seems more like a natural byproduct of our seemingly frenzied lifestyle.
But it really is an often-overlooked symptom. In fact, you may begin to notice that fatigue as early as one week after conception. Again, this has nothing to do with your being overworked (even though most of us are!) or even a lack of nourishment, as many individuals believe.
No, this lack of energy has everything to do with your hormone levels. Shortly after you conceive, your body releases a hormone called progesterone which is the real culprit in your tiredness.
There are several other reasons why you may feel less energetic than normal. Among them are low blood pressure, lower levels of glucose as well as a natural increase in the production of blood. See, there really are very good reasons for your being tired.
4. Fluctuation in Your Mood
While this is often a classic symptom of pregnancy, it’s very often not noticed in the early stages. Mood swings can show up as early as the first trimester. Here again, of course, there could be many other reasons why you’re moody. But if your personal and work situations haven’t changed much and you’re feeling like the mood swings are getting the better of you, then you may want to ask whether you just might be pregnant.
5. Constipation
This is a health issue with a variety of causes which means that thinking of it as one of the pregnancy symptoms is usually low on any woman’s list. But, it can really be a marker indicating you’ve conceived successfully. The constipation is caused by the increased progesterone production.
It’s easy enough to counter though. Eating a high-fiber diet, along with exercising and drinking plenty of water should alleviate the problem.
These are just five of the subtle pregnancy symptoms. If you feel that you may be pregnant, consult with your doctor immediately. The sooner you know, the more precautions you can take to ensure the following nine months are as healthy as possible for your body and for yourself.
