Boston: How Do You Tell If A Rhino Is Pregnant?

Boston,

With a gestation period of 18 months one would expect to have the pregnancy signs at may be 8 months or there between. Its is also very amazing that an adult rhino weighing more than one and half tones can give a young one with a weight of fifty or sixty kilos. This comparable difference is the one that make it very difficult for one to identify the pregnant rhinos.

We expect a pregnant animal including human being not to be served by the males; this is not the case with rhinos. They are known to be served by males even when pregnant this complicate things even more. It’s even hard to note that a rhino is pregnant while in a zoo, at a close look by human. They are often left with the responsibility of guess work and uncertainty.

So even in human species there are several test that can be done to prove that some one is pregnant. But now how do we collect sample of urine, feaces and other specimens required for test from a wild animal that rooms freely over a very wide are? Several methods have been tried but the have are either dangerous or time consuming thus very expensive. Take for instance the correction of urine. How do you approach this? This is a wild animal and known to charge.

Ok, let correct the urine after it has urinated. Then this sample is otherwise contaminated and very little we can correct since is urinating on the ground. So we turn to the second option; its defecations. This will certainly also be contaminated and with very little hormones. This is arguably the best test option left since the foreign materials that constitute the stool are known and this will help us in identifying any other hormone present. The rhino stool can be collected in large quantities thus the best available option

Now there are certainly other methods available out there for the determination of rhino pregnancies, since I am neither a scientist nor a doctor I leave this question to you out there to help us solve this mystery – How else do we tell a pregnant Rhino?
