Boston,
My heartburn pregnancy symptoms began one night after we ate fried calamari and chicken Parmesan (my mouth just salivated remembering that). It was a delicious meal and I ate a bit too much so I decided to lie down.
Within fifteen minutes of lying down I felt as if my esophagus was on fire. It was the very worst heartburn I ever had.
I started to get heartburn almost daily. I was so miserable I tried to eat as infrequently as possible. I knew that was not healthy for my baby so I was eating the bare minimum and my husband was getting quite frustrated with me.
I started to eat more, but just changed what I was eating. The first thing I did was to eliminate fried foods from my diet. I was a fried food junkie. I loved fast food fries, Mexican food, Italian food and just about anything else fried I could get my hands on. It was a sad but necessary reality for me to cut fried foods from my diet.
Eliminating fried foods from my diet helped with my heartburn to some extent. The next thing I had to do was eliminate fatty foods. Knowing my favorite cuisines you understand why this was not easy or fun for me to do, but I did it. When I cut fatty foods from my diet I definitely noticed an even further reduction to my heartburn pregnancy symptoms.
At that point, I cut out fatty foods and fried foods and though there was a significant reduction in my heartburn pregnancy symptoms I still did get heartburn. The next thing I cut out was acidic foods. I totally eliminated citrus fruits and juices from my diet and most tomatoes.
There was definitely a reduction in my heartburn at this point. The next thing I did was to eliminate caffeine and coffee. I stopped drinking coffee completely because I read that decaf coffee can cause heartburn as well. The first few days I was not exactly a happy camper in the mornings but I did get used to it.
By mid-way through my second trimester virtually all of my heartburn pregnancy symptoms had disappeared. I was happy to be able to control my heartburn by diet rather than having to take antacids or prescription medicines. I did not want to have to take those things while I was pregnant.
If you get heartburn pregnancy symptoms you want to act quickly. You probably want to first try to adjust your diet. If that does not work you may want to speak to your doctor about antacids and prescriptions. A beautiful and healthy baby is always worth a little heartburn but if you can stop the heartburn and not harm your baby it is well worth the sacrifice.
