Boston: What To Do Before IVF Treatment

Boston,

If you are wondering what to do before IVF treatment, then this is a very sensible approach. There is much you can do to prepare yourselves beforehand which can increase the chances of a successful outcome.

The first step goes without saying really. You should visit your doctor to discuss your plans to become pregnant and the difficulties you have been having. At this point it would be wise to decide when to begin fertility tests. As you are taking steps towards becoming parents, this is a good time to let go of bad habits, such as smoking and drinking alcohol. In addition, research fertility inhibitors for both men and women, such as bicycle riding, using a hot tub or taking certain prescription medicines and stop or limit any which you feel could be detrimental.

When looking at what to do before IVF treatment another good step is to seek out support from like-minded people. There are many support groups online and your doctor might be able to recommend a forum which you can browse and converse with other couples in the same situation.

Try to relax! Easier said than done sometimes, as we all lead busy lives. However, stress can really inhibit fertility and your chances of a pregnancy. Think carefully about what you find relaxing, be it reading a book, walking, watching the TV or spending time with family and make sure that you take time out to de-stress.

Modify your diet to eat foods which enhance fertility and cut out those which detract. A healthy balanced diet made up of mainly organic foods is the way forward. Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, full fat dairy produce, beans, seeds, nuts and lean meats. It is also important to drink at least 2 liters of filtered water daily to keep your internal organs well-hydrated. You should also consider taking a prenatal supplement and Folic Acid, but check first with your doctor in case she has specific recommendations.

Regular exercise is also a “must” for those looking at what to do before IVF treatment. Think “moderate” rather than “strenuous”, so activities such as walking, yoga and swimming are all excellent choices.

Lastly, make sure that you and your partner keep the lines of communication open. This can be a very stressful time for both partners and it is important to keep talking and share any worries and fears. Also, many couples find it helpful to keep a journal to record their progress and the steps you have taken. This can provide a useful reference should you need to go through further cycles of treatment.
